Many bloggers do a post every Wednesday of only pictures. They call it “Wordless Wednesday”. That seems sort of sacreligious for a writer-type, so I’ve decided to try something a little different. I want to spend Wednesdays thinking about special words and phrases, some real and some pretend, and about what these words and phrases are used for, and how they came to be. So….
What word do you use for the act of skipping forward on your pre-recorded DVR shows?
Craig and I say “Schwink it.” Carina shouts, “Push the yellow button!”. I’m not really sure how schwink it came to be, but it is very singular in its meaning (at least in our household) so it works well.

We say FAST IT…the shortened version of fast forward.

Being that I am the master of the remote at my house, I don’t often get a chance to command someone to fast forward. On the rare occasion that I do, I generally just say, ” arrow it, 3 times.” It’s imperative to say 3 times or god forbid, I may have to suffer through bits of a commercial. If it’s 4 arrows, the forward feature spins out of control and the show comes to an abrupt end. Only I alone can handle the 4 arrows in this household!

This will not surprise anyone who knows us…I don’t have a word for it because we don’t even have a DVR machine. But, we do still have a VCR, and what’s even funnier is that we USE it from time to time!

At our house we just say FF it! As in fast forward it 🙂 It looks pretty funny when written out.

I don’t want to answer. I’m embarrassed. We just say, “FAST FORWARD!” The ballerinas scream it at each other all the time, though. Man, we’re boring.
Is there some fancy new 21st century word for this now? Is it in Wikipedia?

We, too, just say “fast forward.” How boring I feel! “Schwink it” sounds very appealing right about now…

Um…I guess I’d have to say, what is DVR and how do you use it. Yeah, we’re still in the stone ages at my house. I have yet to even attempt to record a show. But when we do, I think I’ll use “schwink,” just so I can enjoy the strange looks I’ll get from my family.

Huh. So I’m the weirdo with a special word for it. Fast Forward, huh? I guess that’s just a little too logical for me.
Kim, not sure about Wikipedia. I can’t figure out what to put in the search box to look it up. Maybe we could start our own Wikipedia page about it.
